Get to Know: Michael Barr

Artist Michael Barr

When did you start painting or drawing or doing whatever it is that makes up your work?

As an artist I started painting or getting the serious artist bone when I hit college 20 years ago. I would get alot of attention for the illustrations I would do along with my notes. Then it was only about 10 ( when I turned 30 ) years ago that I really started getting serious and doing more paintings.

What artist or artists do you consider as having the greatest influence on your work?

The latest artist to have great influence on my work is Isvan Sandorfi, his colors, subjects, and his way of displaying them, just impresses me.

If you could only pass along one piece of advice to a young artist, what would that be?

Any advice I may give to young artist/s, is paractice by looking at other artists work, and trying to do what they have done. Books, magazines, posters, etc…are all great ways to find work to practice doing. And invest in new tools to help you get to where you want to go as an artist.

Do you have a favorite piece of art by someone other than yourself?  How about by you?

One of my own favorite pieces is the portrait I did of a Black Bear…it’s very anthropomorphic and simple, but for some reason, it carries alot of visual weight for me. As far as for other artists, my favorites change all the time about a certain piece.

Do you listen to music when you work?

MUSIC IS ABSOLUTELY NEEDED for me to get in the rythm of doing my artwork. It’s a necessary ingredient for me to sit at the easle or drawing table for hours at a time, and to be relaxed enough to come up with the work that I do. I listen to many different artist and music types, it all depends on what the subject is that I’m working on.

What type of things do you read?

I love looking at Art Collector magazine for great inspiration. No ads for watches or clothes, or cars……it’s all about the art !!
