Gallery Talk with GC Myers Saturday

July 30, 2015
"Transmitters" - A new painting from GC Myers

“Transmitters” – A new painting from GC Myers

Just a reminder that this coming Saturday, August 1, the West End Gallery will be hosting the annual Gallery Talk with GC Myers.  It’s has always been a well attended and entertaining event with a few surprises thrown in along the way.  We expect the same with this year’s talk.  As has been a tradition for the past several of his talks, there be a drawing to be held at the end of the talk where Myers will be giving away the painting shown below.  It is titled Destiny Bound and is a 16″ by 20″ painting on canvas set in a gilded frame.

We suggest you get to the gallery a few minutes before the 1 PM starting time to register for the drawing which is free and open to all in attendance. It’s usually a fun event with give and take between the artist and the audience.  So, if you’re the area on Saturday, please make plans to be with us for an entertaining and informative hour.  Hope to see you here!

Home+Land/ GC Myers Show Opening Friday

July 15, 2015

GC Myers Home+Land smThis Friday, July 17, marks the opening here at the West End Gallery for the annual exhibit of new paintings from artist GC Myers.   The show is titled Home+Land and it’s a great looking show, filling the gallery with lots of saturated color and textures. We hope you can make it to the opening reception on Friday even from 5-7:30 PM at our gallery here on historic Market Street in Corning.

The artist will be on hand to answer your questions and there will also be music from guitarist William Groome as well as refreshments and light snacks.  It’ll be a wonderful evening with a show that we think you definitely see.

Here is what Gary had to say about the title painting, at the top here, and the theme of this show on his blog, RedTreeTimes:

The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.

–Maya Angelou

*****************

This is the title painting, Home+Land,  for my next solo show which opens July 17 at the West End Gallery in Corning.  It’s a pretty large painting at 36″ high  by 48″ wide on canvas and one that fairly represents my feelings on how we are tied to the land, how we identify home with a sense of place.  This is the theme for this show as well as for much of my work in general.

I have long equated the idea of home with the landscape, with how we are shaped by those places that we know from an early age.  The rhythm, the shapes and the perspectives of the landscape that surrounds us becomes part of who we are , something that travels with us throughout our lives. Wherever we go, we look for similarities to that feeling of our home landscape.

It might be in the actual landforms or the way in which the vegetation interacts with the land and the structures of the homes there. It simply looks like home.  Or it might be just in the way the light strikes the land or the rhythm and flow of movement within the landscape that create a level of comfort that equates to that feeling of home.

I know, for myself, that there have been places where I have been where the landscape has been so different from the hills and fields surrounding my original home yet I still feel a sense of being at home.  And there are other places that, while similar in shape and having beauty and charms of their own, leave me uneasy and feeling out of place.  And there are places in which I immediately feel out of place in an alien way, places to which I could never fully adapt.  Definitely not at home.

I guess what I am trying to say is that home is a mix of feeling and place.  It is that place where you feel as comfortable and satisfied in place as the Red Tree in the painting above.

Trish Coonrod – Still Life with Blue Plate and Blue Egg

One of our most popular exhibits here at the West End Gallery is the annual Director’s Choice show where Gallery Director Linda Gardner chooses her personal favorites from among the gallery’s new and existing work.  It’s always a beautifully coordinated show that reflects Linda’s own personal connection to the work and one that resonates with our collectors as well.  This year’s show has an incredible mix of work with some fabulous new work from gallery veterans such as Tom Gardner and Aleta Wynn Yarrow and newer additions to the roster such as painter Trish Coonrod and sculptor Don Sottile.  These names are just scratching the surface of all the great work on hand so make sure to come into the gallery to see for yourself.

The Director’s Choice show begins with an opening reception tonight , Friday, November 21, from 5-7:30 PM at our Market Street gallery.  The exhibit hangs from now until January 16, 2015, making it the perfect way to end up a great year at the West End Gallery.  Come in to have sip of wine and a bite, take in the great art, meet the artists and listen to the beautiful music provided tonight by Michele Gordon and Dennis Winge.  It will warm up your evening– we promise!
